Fushimi-Inari-Taisha

On Sunday morning, September 26th, Diana and I took a break from "everything textiles" and went to the South end of Kyoto to visit Fushimi-Inari, an extensive shrine that winds uphill for 4 km through the woods. Walking through this enormous hallway of orange gates at first felt quite strange -- a little eerie -- but I soon felt quite calmed by the whole experience in spite of the elevated heart rate from the uphill climb. The passage through the shrine is marked by hundreds of stunning, bright orange gates called "torii" . (I couldn't help thinking that Christo MUST have visited this place!) It was built in the 8th century to honour the gods of rice and sake and today it is one of Japan's most popular shrines.
